Waiting for Another Warm Body

This is a long overdue idea I finally had a chance to do. Ever since I got this masquerade mask last year I’ve wanted to use it for shoot where the model’s entire body was painted white. The results turned out better than I anticipated. There will be a lot more from this shoot to come and there’s also some video I’m planning to include in a larger project.
model: Franccesca de Struct
I purchased this mask when I was in New Orleans a couple of months ago. It caught my eye as I walked passed the shop and I had to go in and get it. I like to have all sorts of random things I can use for photo shoots. When Franccesca contacted me about doing a shoot I figured she would be a perfect model for it.

The past three years I’ve had photo shoots with Kendra when I was in Seattle. Sometimes you click with a model and the sessions become so relaxed that they turn into a mini party (just like all those adolescent teenage boys imagine things are all the time for artists like me). This time around we had a big playground and even put the dining table to good use. Yes, the hotel room had a dining table.
photo transfer on 5″x7″ mat board
This artwork is part of a print of my last piece “Silent Haven” that was ripped and transferred. I’ve always said the results the image transfer process is unpredictable. This one turned out capturing and enhancing the spooky mood of the original.

A haven is a place of shelter and security. Everyone struggles with themselves to keep our own personal havens intact every now and then.
Before a photo shoot where one of my ideas involves creating a manipulation, I have notes written so I don’t forget about the shots I’d like to get. Sometimes it can be hard to explain to the model since the vision of what I’m trying to do only exists in my head. Although we didn’t spend long taking a series of photos for this, the images we got worked better than what I imagined and I didn’t have to spend much time picking out the pieces for the composition.
You can purchase prints of “Silent Haven” from my Art & Photo Print Shop.

This is a random shot/outtake from last year in Seattle. There was a mess of clothes and bags on the floor behind her (and I think that’s my camera backpack on the chair) but when I saw this, I loved the the connection of her eyes as she hid her face with the mask. Now that I see it, this photo is kind of a callback to a photo we did in 2009.
I’m planning a trip to Seattle in May and we’re set to meet up again while I’m there. A couple of my wilder photo shoots have been with Kendra and her friend Jenna. By the end of the night this photo was taken, everyone was passed out in bed… and I was only wearing a name tag for some reason…

The plague doctor mask is freaky, interesting, and unique looking. It transforms its wearer and makes them look like some sort of creature. Here it has melded itself onto Elle’s body.
