Art Flashback: Plumed Plum

From 2004: “Plumed Plum”
graphite, colored pencil, watercolor & pastel on 18″x24″ watercolor paper

I have a self-imposed rule that my portfolio on this site doesn’t have any work before a certain point. The funny thing is, although I’m not showing that art anymore, I still have some of them hanging in my home. Plumed Plum is a favorite of mine and I even used it on the invitation for a solo art show in 2005. I was thinking about this piece recently and wanted to show her off again.

Art Flashback: Whitewash

“Whitewash”
acrylic and gauze on 36″x36″ canvas

From 2006. This was a case of taking an event in my life and using it for my art. I burned my left hand pretty bad early in the year and had it wrapped in gauze for several weeks. One day I decided to take some leftover gauze and use it for this painting. Of course it wasn’t used gauze that was stained with my blood, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop people from saying that whenever they see this.

Art Flashback: Winged Illyria

model: Illyria Jade
digital photo manipulation

From 2008. I played around with this photo one weekend using different Photoshop brushes to get a gritty, grungy look. Although I think the wings are slightly cheesy now that I see it again , I like how everything turned out.

Art Flashback: Pink No More

From 2003: “Pink No More”
watercolor & graphite on 15″x20″ watercolor paper

I’m in the midst of either working on or planning out some new pieces. For now lets take a look back at an old favorite of mine. This was from a period where I was new to working a full time job. Sometimes at the end of the day frustrations will get to you.

The original drawing of “Pink No More” is currently hanging in my stairway but I can sell it to a good home or you can order prints of it. I’m also available for art commissions.

White Noiz

from 2010: “White Noiz”
photo transfer on 8″x10″ wood panel

The results of image transfers always surprise me because they seem to do whatever they want to. They do with me anyway. I prepped the wood with some gesso. I found out it wasn’t completely dry once I did the transfer though. After I pressed the inkjet transparency print, I pulled it off and it took some of the gessoed surface. It just happened to give it that wonderful weathered look you see.

“White Noiz” is currently available in my Etsy store. You can also get prints of it from my Art & Photo Print Shop.

Allusion

from 2008: “Allusion”
graphite on 12″x24″ birch wood

This is one of the few (probably two) pieces I’ve done on wood where I let the grain show through. I was spring cleaning and organized my home studio when I saw it again. It had a few marks from being handled and transported to shows. It was easy to fix though because they could be sanded off. Before long the whole piece was like new again.

“Allusion” is currently available in my Etsy store. You can also get prints of it from my Art & Photo Print Shop.

Melancholy Requiem

from 2008: “Melancholy Requiem”
acrylic & graphite on 18″x24″ wood panel

“Melancholy Requiem” was one of those pieces where I saw someone else’s work and it gave me an idea for something of my own. In this case it was a black surface with a splash of white and a drawing in that area. It’s simple in its approach and execution but there are times things don’t need to be overdone. Also, since I’ve done this piece, I often start with a black surface and build up the painting from there.

“Melancholy Requiem” is currently for sale in my Etsy Store. You can also purchase prints of it from my Art & Photo Print Shop.

Art Flashback: Wayward Fool

From 2004: Wayward Fool
acrylic on 24″x30″ canvas

I wouldn’t show more than half the artwork I did during 2004 today. It’s just part of the natural evolution of becoming a better artist. However, it’s also partly because of each artwork’s relevance to where I am in life. Even if it’s not obvious to anyone but me, creating artwork often comes from a personal place. Wayward Fool is one piece that I feel stands the test of time. It’s not only because I liked how it turned out but also because it deals with themes I still work with.

I displayed it at the last show I was a part of and it fit in perfectly with newer work I’ve done. It’s funny though because I’m not sure if I ever showed when it was a newer piece. I know I cut it from a solo show I had in 2005. I remember someone told me they were interested in it after seeing it on my website and they were a little disappointed it wasn’t in the show. Oh well, I know I’ve exhibited Wayward Fool in at least one place. Now it’s being stored in my studio again, but it’s available if anyway wants to give it a good home.

Art Flashback: The Tragic

from 2004: “The Tragic”
acrylic on 24″x30″ canvas

I sold a print of this earlier this week and that’s what made me take a look at “The Tragic” again. Although it’s six years old, this is one piece that stands the test of time. I think I should take her out of storage in the studio and show her again soon.

Art Flashback: Trashed

From 2003: “Trashed”
watercolor & graphite on 15″x20″ watercolor paper

While looking through older work I stumbled upon this oldie but goodie. This was part of a series of watercolor and graphite works on paper I did in Fall 2003. I had been living in Austin for several months already and this was a period where I drank to excess too often. Of course, being in my early-mid twenties at the time, I could get away with that a lot more then I’m able to now. That doesn’t mean I don’t drink these days. Maybe I’ve become more disciplined and don’t let myself get drunk because I can’t get up and go in the mornings after a wild night like I used to.
