Then she said, "What you mean you didn't bring your camera?"

As I write this, I’m looking out my hotel room’s window at Detroit’s gloomy, snowy skyline on Valentine’s Day. I’m here for the thirteenth annual Dirty Show and its Valentine’s Night event. The past few days I was in Orlando for Nude Nite. Both of these shows have become pretty big and display the work of hundreds of artists from everywhere in the nation. They’re not your usual art exhibit. Besides the art hanging on the walls, both have a carnival-like atmosphere with a stage show and models/performers set up or wandering all over. The sizes of the audiences are impressive too. They’re major events and I’m glad to be a small part of them.

I haven’t had much on my agenda other than attending the events. I didn’t actively pursue scheduling any photo shoots on this trip. So that’s left me with plenty of downtime to relax or think. One thing I’ve been thinking about is what I’d like to do next.

I didn’t want to book any work on this trip because I’m realizing photography keeps eating up more of my time. I have several ideas for artwork that I’m antsy to work on. The way I schedule my day into blocks of time, having a backlog of photography will keep cannibalizing the time I set aside for creating work. Sorting through and editing photographs is a much easier and quicker process for me. So I get that out of the way first. Without a lot of photography to work on, I can streamline my focus into creating work that has more of my core ideas and intentions behind them.

Working with models and taking their picture is something I enjoy but it needs to be scaled back. (Maybe you’ve noticed that I have already been posting photography less frequently in my blog) I’ve always regarded a majority of my photography as more of a side project. That’s because, for me personally, the images don’t have much to them beyond the surface.

On one hand photography is something I’ve been recognized for. It’s helped me make new connections and reach new audiences. In fact, the work in the Dirty Show and Nude Nite was photography. On the other hand, I don’t want to be pigeon holed as a naughty photographer. The attention I get for that is not always something I want. Nude photography will always get more attention on the internet. In the end all those visitors don’t do me much good since I merely regard them as window shoppers. They aren’t necessarily people who will be back and continue to follow my art.

I’m not done taking pictures. What may end up happening is there will be less photography in its pure form coming from me. It will have a tighter integration with my artwork, there may be more photo manipulations, and more photo shoots will be done strictly for reference purposes. A couple of paintings I have planned will be based on or built upon photos.

Some of you might be disappointed. Maybe it’s because you won’t see new imagery from me as often or you really like looking at photos of women who are often nude. If you’re the latter, I don’t need to cater to you. What I don’t want to do is sell myself short or remain stagnant. Isn’t the desire to push oneself further and explore creativity the mark of a true artist?

Note: This doesn’t meant I’m not scheduling photography sessions. I am merely referring to my personal work, which is separate from client work.

Also, I still have several photos that I haven’t finished yet that you will be seeing in the weeks to come.

The Dirty Wrap-Up

I should add that dancing girls are at all the shows I participate in to my rider

Another adventure came and went with the opening weekend of the Dirty Show 12 on February 11th & 12th.  I arrived late on a three degree fahrenheit evening to Detroit and stayed at a nice bed and breakfast for a few snowy days. I highly recommend The Inn on Ferry Street if you’re ever there. It’s made up of several historic Victorian homes built in the 1800s and each room is unique. Although I didn’t get to see much of the city, I was told I stayed in a nice part of town.

Getting back to the Dirty Show, it was a good mix of all types of artwork. It ran the gamut from fantastically good, very naughty, humorous, and maybe just a little bit wrong (in the conservative society kind of way). There was also a stage show with different types of burlesque, dance, and other performances. The production could have been better though. They had some technical problems and the level of the performers wasn’t near the caliber of similar shows I’ve been to. Before going to the event I was happy to see my piece was featured in Real Detroit Weekly’s coverage of the Dirty Show. Towards the end of the opening night I saw that it had sold. So overall I think I can say I had a good experience.

While I was there I had three photo shoots and I just might have some submissions for next year’s Dirty Show after reviewing a few of the photos.  I started working on the images this weekend and will start posting some of them in the days to come.

The Dirty Show in Detroit

February 11 – 19, 2011
Detroit, MI
for information: dirtydetroit.com

The Dirty Show kicks off this weekend in Detroit. One of my photographs will be in the show and I’ll have several prints for sale in their shop. Unless the weather cancels my flight like it did for my trip to Albuquerque for the “Lab AD” exhibit last weekend, I plan to make the excursion to Detroit for the show. These kinds of events are always fun since there’s all sorts of entertainment. Plus I have some photo shoots lined up with some great models while I’m there. I’m also really interested in seeing if Detroit’s reputation is true and if it really is like some kind of third world country with casinos and a football team.

I’m starting to think I should add kind of subtitle after my name that says “Naughty Artist” or something with all these erotic themed art shows I participate in. I’ve been in many of them. They include a couple in Corpus Christi and Dallas, last year’s Seattle Erotic Art Festival, Nite Nude Tampa next month, and every year I donate work to ArtErotica in Austin. As an artist, sometimes it can be difficult to find an audience for what I create, but it is good to know there is a place for some of my work.

Lab AD in Albuquerque

February 4 – 18, 2011
at BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art
Albuquerque, NM

For my first big show of the year I’m pleased to be a part of this international event of artists and designers. This show looked like an interesting opportunity and I signed up for it. Rather than submit work that already existed, I created a new painting at the 12″x12″ size they set. I finished it in late December and set it off in mid-January. It will have its debut on Friday, February 4th. More information about the show can found on the BECA Foundation’s website www.BECAICAD.org and the Facebook event page.

Hopefully this will be a good start to shows I’m a part of this year. I already shipped my work for the Dirty Show February 11th – 19th in Detroit, and this week I was notified I’ll have a piece in Nude Night during early March in Tampa. Being in these out-of-town shows also gives me an excuse to travel. My plans are set for Albuquerque and Detroit over the next two weekends. I’ll get to see parts of the country that are new to me (although I visited New Mexico as a teenager but have very little recollection of it). It’s not going to be all about being a tourist though. When I travel I like to schedule photo shoots with models while I’m in the area and these trips are no different. So it’s not going to be all play. I’ll be doing some work too. Of course, in my case, my work can often feel like play.
